Ways to Earn CEUs

PMI provides several ways for certified professionals to earn the necessary CEUs each year. However, CEUs may be earned from a variety of sources. All programs that have prior CEU approval through PMI or another qualified credentialing organization (i.e., AMA, AHIMA, AAPC, AMBA, PAHCOM) will be accepted. Continuing education programs without prior CEU approval will be accepted upon verification of its legitimacy and relevancy.

  1. Live In-person Continuing Education Programs - attend seminars, workshops, conferences or other classroom style continuing education programs.

  2. Webinars or Audio Seminars - participate in web or audio based learning activities.

  • Online Courses

    PMI offers a wide variety of online course topics for the distance learner. Go to https://www.pmimd.com/online and browse the course listings. Note the time limits and required textbooks (if any) prior to purchase.

  • Low cost or Complimentary Training Options for Distance Learners
    • Pre-recorded Training Sessions with CEU quizzes
      PMI has compiled a library of past webinar or conference training sessions. Purchase an archived training topic and earn CEUs when you complete the accompanying quiz with a score of 80% or better. Choose from individual training topics available at https://www.pmimd.com/audio/recorded.asp or earn all 12 CEUs with a package of topics designed for your specific PMI credential at https://www.pmimd.com/audio/special8.asp.
    • MedLearn Web-based Training
      Medicare offers a number of complimentary training modules. Click on the Web-based Training (WBT) Courses link and browse the course listings to select a module at https://www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-Learning-Network-MLN/MLNProducts/WebBasedTraining.html
    • BC Advantage subscribers receive access to an online CEU center and PMI has approved 1 CEU per successful completion of a CEU package at www.billing-coding.com
    • Professional Association Meetings - attend relevant professional association meetings that include an educational component with prior CEU approval (i.e., an educational presentation or a hands-on coding clinic).


  • Teaching CEUs - if you are teaching at an accredited college, university or other educational organization recognized by PMI, you may be eligible to apply 6 CEUs toward your renewal. Written verification from the school documenting the teaching assignment(s) and a copy of the related course syllabus is required. Relevant courses include topics that address the business of medicine and relate directly to the core competency represented by the PMI credential.
