Karen Scott has a career that spans both healthcare and education. As a healthcare business manager, her career encompassed reception, medical records, coding, billing, collections, negotiation, payroll, credentialing, and all phases of the day to day operations of a busy multi-specialty medical practice. Karen has a passion for lifelong education and has taught adult learners for over 30 years at community colleges in Washington state, where she received the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence in 2000. She has developed medical billing and coding programs for two community colleges and has extensive experience in online course development and facilitation.
Karen's professional interests focus on educating her students in accurate, efficient, and ethical coding that follows the nationally recognized guidelines and enhances profitability in the medical practice. She has a keen interest in the various roles of the healthcare team, from reception to physician, and how each member can contribute to the success of a medical practice. She believes that effective and efficient communication helps build trust and fosters teamwork in any healthcare setting.
Karen's Master's degree is in Adult Education and Distance Learning, magna cum laude. She currently serves on PMI's Certified Medical Coder Advisory Committee.
